The short answer
Use a seasonal check as a starting point, then adjust to the debris and drainage conditions around your home. Nearby trees and storms can mean more frequent attention; a calendar alone cannot tell you whether a gutter or downspout is blocked.
Treat seasonal checks as a starting point
CertainTeed's drainage guidance recommends checking and cleaning gutters in spring and fall. That is a manufacturer's recommendation, not a universal schedule for every home. Tree cover, debris, weather and the drainage system influence how often your gutters need attention.
For your San Antonio home, note when leaves or other debris tend to accumulate and recheck after storms when it is safe. The useful question is whether water has an open path—not simply whether six months have passed.
Look for clues from the ground
Visible debris and water spilling over the gutter edge are reasons to arrange a closer assessment. Observe from a safe ground-level location rather than using a ladder during rain or climbing onto the roof.
Overflow can have more than one cause, so do not assume cleaning will resolve every drainage problem. Describe where you see overflow and whether water is also entering the home when you request service.
Do not forget the downspouts
FEMA advises keeping both gutters and downspouts clear so water can drain freely. Its guidance also notes that shingle granules can contribute to sediment buildup. Clearing leaves from the top of a gutter does not establish that the entire drainage path is open.
The drainage path should carry water away from the roof and home. Franco's gutter cleaning service includes downspout clearing and a water-flow inspection, allowing those concerns to be discussed as part of the service scope.
Cleaning and roof-leak repair are different jobs
If you see an interior water stain as well as an overflowing gutter, mention both. Gutter cleaning addresses the drainage path; a roof leak may involve shingles, flashing, vents or another roof component and need separate repair work.
Franco Roofing & Remodeling offers gutter cleaning and roof repair across San Antonio and surrounding areas. Request a free estimate and describe the conditions you have noticed. This service covers gutter cleaning, downspout clearing and flow inspection—not a promise of gutter installation or replacement.
Your next-step checklist
- Check seasonal debris patterns around your home.
- Look for visible overflow from a safe location.
- Include downspouts in the drainage discussion.
- Mention interior leaks separately from blocked gutters.
