Suspected Hail Damage? Safe Next Steps for Your San Antonio Roof

The short answer

Wait until the storm has passed, observe from a safe location, document visible damage and arrange a professional assessment. Dents or damaged plants can suggest hail impact, but they do not establish how much roof work is needed.

Stay safe before inspecting anything

The National Weather Service advises staying indoors during hailstorms. After the storm, do not climb onto the roof. Observe only from a safe place and avoid damaged areas or unsafe attic access.

Dented patio covers, damaged screens or plants, and damage to soft-metal roof vents can be clues that hail affected the property. A clue is not a diagnosis: the absence of obvious ground-level damage also does not confirm the roof is undamaged.

Document what you can see

Texas Department of Insurance recommends taking photos or video and making a list of damage before repairs. Note the storm date, visible damage and any new leaks. Keep receipts for reasonable temporary work to prevent additional damage.

Only take temporary measures that can be done safely. Do not attempt rooftop repairs yourself. If damage creates an immediate hazard, stay clear of that area and seek appropriate help.

Talk to your insurer before permanent repairs

TDI generally advises speaking with your insurer before making permanent repairs. Ask what documentation is needed and how your policy treats the reported damage. Coverage, deductibles and claim decisions depend on your policy and insurer.

An inspection or contractor estimate is not a promise that insurance will pay. Franco offers storm and hail damage roof repair; this does not imply that Franco handles claims or negotiates with insurers.

Compare the scope and check the contractor

TDI encourages homeowners to get more than one estimate, check references and avoid paying the entire amount upfront. Ask for a written description of the work and materials. Be wary of anyone promising to waive your homeowners' deductible; TDI warns that deductible waivers are illegal under Texas law.

Your next-step checklist

  • Wait for safe conditions; stay off the roof.
  • Photograph visible damage and note the storm date.
  • Ask your insurer about documentation and coverage.
  • Compare written estimates and check references.
